The Stiffy by the Liffey | 07:47AM Mar 30, 2008
Today's post, as was yesterday's, comes from the trip I took last May to Dublin. Before I left, my grandparents gave me a short list of must-see items; one of which was the so-called "Floozie in the Jacuzzi" on O'Connell Street. Once I got there I soon realized, however, that the sculpture didn't exist, at least not on O'Connell Street.
In its place was the tall phallic symbol you see here known as the Dublin Spire. Well, the Dublin Spire or "The Stiletto in the Ghetto," "The Spire in the Mire," "The Spike in the Dyke," "The Poker near Croker," "The Erection at the Intersection," or my personal favorite, "The Stiffy by the Liffey." No matter your preference of nickname, the Spire isn't the first monument to be given a racy nickname. After all, "The Prick with the Stick," "Crank on the Bank," "The Hags with the Bags," "The Quare in the Square," and "The Tart with the Cart" all preceded the "Stiffy by the Liffey."
No shame in Ireland. Got to love it.
